First Declension
Vocabulary Expansion

LatinPraxis Index

Acquire extensive vocabulary as quickly and as easily as possible.

Most of the following words are historically related to English ones, but remember that in Latin, they do not always mean exactly what their English counterparts might imply. The following list can be used as a source for first-declension exercises. It also assists rapid vocabulary-expansion as well as vocabulary-extension (through the Latin cognates) as a means of building up the students' knowlege of word-families (structûra - struô - construô - dêstruô - instructiô - instructor). Attending to differences of meanings, Latin cognates, and Latin synonyms promotes the deep-processing necessary for vocabulary acquisition. Some words have been included not necessarily because they are cognates (âlea - aleatory), but because they have some other relevance; e.g., they occur in famous statements ("Âlea iacta est.") or they can be easily deduced (breviloquentia from êloquentia) or they have important modern Romance cognates (bibliothêca).
