Initium evangelii Iesu Christi Filii Dei. |
Beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God |
Sicut scriptum est in Isaia propheta: "Ecce mitto angelum meum ante faciem tuam, qui praeparabit viam tuam; |
Just as it has been written in Isaiah the prophet: "Lo, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way; |
vox clamantis in deserto: "Parate viam Domini, rectas facite semitas eius"; |
the voice of one crying in the desert: "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths"; |
fuit Joannes Baptista in deserto praedicans baptismum paenitentiae in remissionem peccatorum. |
there was John the Baptist in the desert preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. |
And there went out to him the entire region of Judaea and of the entirety of Jerusalem and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan confessing their sins. |
And John was dressed with the hairs of a camel and with a belt of skins around his loins, and he ate locusts and wild honey. |
Et praedicabat dicens: "Venit fortior me post me, cuius non sum dignus procumbens solvere corrigiam calceamentorum eius. |
And he was preaching saying, "One stronger than I comes after me, of whom I am not worthy leaning down to loosen the strap of his sandals. |
Ego baptizavi vos aqua; ille vero baptizabit vos in Spiritu Sancto." |
I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit." |
And it happened in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. |
And immediately rising from the water he saw the skies opened and the Spirit as a dove descending upon him; |
and a voice sounded from the skies: "You are my beloved Son; in you I have been pleased." |
Et statim Spiritus expellit eum in desertum. |
And immediately the Spirit drove him out into the desert. |
et erat in deserto quadraginta diebus et quadraginta noctibus. Eratque cum bestiis et angeli ministrabant illi. |
and he was in the desert for forty days and forty nights. And he was with the beasts and angels served him. |
However after John was handed over, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the reign of God |
and saying that "The time has been fulfilled and the reign of God has drawn near, repent and believe the Gospel!" |
and passing by along the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting their nets into the sea; for they were fishers. |
Et dixit eis Iesus: "Venite post me, et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum." |
And Jesus said to them: Come after me, and I will make you [to become] fishers of men." |
Et protinus, relictis retibus, secuti sunt eum. |
And right away, with the nets abandoned, they followed him. |
And having gone forward a little, he saw James of Zebedee and John his brother and those in the ship arranging nets, |
and immediately he called them. And, his father Zebedee left behind in the ship with the hired men, they went away after him. |
Et ingrediuntur Capharnaum. Et statim sabbatis ingressus synagogam docebat. |
And they come into Capharnaum. And immediately, on the Sabbath, having entered the synagogue, he was teaching. |
And they were astounded over his teaching: for he was teaching them as one having power and not as the scribes. |
Et statim erat in synagoga eorum homo in spiritu immundo et exclamavit |
And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit and he cried out |
dicens: "Quid nobis et tibi, Iesu Nazarene? Venisti perdere nos? Scio qui sis: Sanctus Dei!" |
saying: "What is it to us and to you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: The Holy One of God!" |
And Jesus threatened him saying: "Keep quiet and come out of the man!" |
and ripping him apart the unclean spirit also shouting out with loud voice went out from him. |
And they all wondered, so that they asked one another saying: "What kind of thing is this?" |
A new teaching with power; he commands even unclean spirits, and they obey him." |
And there went forth rumor of him immediately everywhere in every region of Galilee. |
And leaving right away from the synagogue they came into the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. |
However the mother-in-law of Simon was in bed having a fever; and immediately they tell him about her. |
Et accedens elevavit eam apprehensa manu; et dimisit eam febris, et ministrabat eis. |
And drawing near he raised her up her hand having been grasped; and the fever released her, and she waited on them. |
But evening having fallen, when the sun had set, they bore to him all feeling poorly and having demons. |
et erat omnis civitas congregata ad ianuam. |
and the whole city was there gathered at the door. |
And he cured many who were troubled by different weaknesses, and he expelled many demons and did not allow the demons to speak since they knew him. |
And rising at dawn very early he went out and departed into a deserted place and there he was praying. |
And Simon pursued him, and those who were with him; |
and when they had found him, they said to him: "All are seeking you!" |
And he says to them: "Let us go elsewhere into the nearest villages, so that even there I might preach: for I came for this." |
And he came preaching in their synagogus through all Galilee and casting out demons. |
And there came to him a leper beseeching him and bending his knee, and saying to him: "If you want, you can cleanse me." |
Et misertus extendens manum suam tetigit eum et ait illi: "Volo, mundare!"; |
And having pitied him, holding out his hand touched him and he says to him: I do want, be cleansed!"; |
and immediately there left from him the leprosy and he was cleansed. |
Et infremuit in eum statimque eiecit illum |
And he roared at him and immediately he cast him out |
and he says to him "See that you tell no one anything; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as a witness for them." |
But he having gone out began to preach much and to spread around the word, such that no longer could he openly enter into the city but he was outside in deserted places; and they were coming to him on all sides. |
And again he entered Capharnaum after [some] days and it was heard that he was in the house. |
And many came together, such that they would not be taken in not even at the door and he spoke the word to them. |
And they come bearing to him a paralytic, who was being carried by four. |
And since they could not bear him to him on account of the crowd, they stripped the roof, where he was, and digging through they lower the mat on which the paralytic was lying. |
But when Jesus had seen their faith he says to the paralytic: "Son, your sins are forgiven." |
There were however there some from the scribes sitting and thinking in their hearts: |
"Quid hic sic loquitur? Blasphemat! Quis potest dimittere peccata nisi solus Deus?" |
"Why does this man speak thus? He blasphemes! Who is able to forgive sins except only God?" |
Quo statim cognito Iesus spiritu suo quia sic cogitarent intra se, dicit illis: "Quid ista cogitatis in cordibus vestris? |
With this immediately realized, Jesus in his spirit that they thought thus within themselves, says to them: "Why do you think these things in your hearts? |
What is easier to say to the paralytic: "Your sins are forgiven" or to say "Rise and take your mat and walk"? |
Ut autem sciatis quia potestatem habet Filius hominis in terra dimittendi peccata ait paralytico: |
But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on the earth to forgive sins he says to the paralytic: |
Tibi dico: Surge, tolle grabatum tuum et vade in domum tuam." |
I say to you: Rise up, take up your mat and go into your house." |
And he rose up and right away with his mat lifted up he left in front of all such that all were amazed and glorified God saying: "Never have we seen thus!" |
And he went out again to the sea; and the whole crowd came to him, and he taught them. |
And when he passed by, he saw Levi of Alphaeus sitting at a toll-booth and he says to him: "Follow me." And rising he followed him. |
And it happened when he reclined to eat in his house both many revenuers and sinners at the same time reclined to eat with Jesus and his disciples; for they were many and they followed him. |
And the scribes of the pharisees, seeing that he was eating with sinners and revenuers, were quizzing his disciples: "Why does he eat with revenuers and sinners?" |
And Jesus, this being heard, says to them "The well have no need for a doctor but those who feel ill; I have not come to call the just but sinners." |
And there were the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fasting. And they come and they say to him: "Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?" |
And Jesus says to them: "Can the guests of the wedding fast as long as the groom is with them? For as much time as they have the groom with them they cannot fast; |
However the days come when the groom is taken from them and then they will fast on that day. |
Nemo assumentum panni rudis assuit vestimento veteri, alioquin supplementum aufert ab eo novum a veteri, et peior scissura fit. |
No one sews a patch of rough cloth onto an old garment or else the addition will pull from it the new from the old, and the tear becomes worse. |
And no one puts fresh wine in old skins or else the wine will burst the skins and the wine is lost and the skins too but new wine in new skins!" |
And it happened when he himself on the Sabbath was walking through the crops his disciples began to move ahead plucking ears of grain. |
The Pharisees however said to him: "Look, why do they do on the Sabbath, what is not permitted?" |
And he says to them: "Have you never read what David did when he had need and was hungry himself and those who were with him? |
How he entered the house of God under Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the exposition which it is not right to eat except for the priests, and he gave it even to them who were with him?" |
And he said to them: "Sabbath was made for the sake of Man and not Man for the sake of Sabbath; |
itaque dominus est Filius hominis etiam sabbati." |
And so the Son of Man is master even of Sabbath. |
Et introivit iterum in synagogam. Et erat ibi homo habens manum aridam; |
And he entered the synagogue again. And there was there a man having a withered hand; |
and they were watching him, if he would cure him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him. |
Et ait homini habenti manum aridam: "Surge in medium." |
And he says to the many having the withered hand "Come up into the middle." |
Et dicit eis: "Licet sabbatis bene facere an male? Animam salvam facere an perdere?" At illi tacebant. |
And he says to them: "Is it permitted on the Sabbath to act well or badly? To save life or to lose it? And they were silent. |
Et circumspiciens eos cum ira, contristatus super caecitate cordis eorum, dicit homini: "Extende manum." Et extendit, et restituta est manus eius. |
And looking around at them with anger grieved over the blindness of their hearts, he says to the man: "Stretch out your hand." And he stretches it out, and his hand was restored. |
And going out, the Pharisees immediately with the Herodians made a plot against him how they might destroy him. |
And Jesus with his disciples withdrew to the sea. And a large crowd from Galilee followed even from Judaea |
and from Jerusalem and Idumaea; and those across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, hearing what he was doing, came to him. |
Et dixit discipulis suis, ut navicula sibi praesto esset propter turbam, ne comprimerent eum. |
And he said to his disciples, that a little boat should be ready for him on account of the crowd, so that they would not press on him. |
For he cured many, so that they rushed upon him, to touch him, as many as had wounds. |
