The complete Latin text is now available at at this link.
This is the first known full translation of the medieval epic. Thorkelin's knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon language was deficient, so that his composition is not so much a faithful guide to the meaning of the text as it is a testament to the long-standing use of Latin as a preferred tool for intercultural understanding. It is also a landmark in the history of the poem's interpretation. Some of the spellings have been altered in order to conform with current conventions, and some typographical mistakes have been corrected. Created: November 28, 2008. Last edited: May 6, 2013.
